Inspired by CAN’s seminal 2022 project Ngaluk Waangkiny, Legacies Karlkurla/Kalgoorlie is a multi-layered portraiture and storytelling project that celebrates the legacy of ten Aboriginal Elders from communities of the Goldfields. Charting unique journeys through critical times in Australian history, Legacies honours their resilience amidst the challenging social issues of this rural, mining region.
Presented in 2025/2026 with support from the Museum of the Goldfields, Tjuma Pulka Media Aboriginal Corporation and ABC Kalgoorlie Esperance, Legacies was led by Goldfields-based Project Producer Monika Dvorak and Creative Producer Debbie Carmody, and CAN Executive Producer Michelle White, working in consultation with Elders and Traditional Owners. The project was structured around a series of residencies, during which the Elders’ stories were recorded and documented across a range of media, including portraits taken by internationally acclaimed Djugun-Yawuru photographer Michael Jalaru Torres and podcast interviews recorded in the ABC Goldfields studios.
In collaboration with community members, the materials gathered were carefully curated and presented at an exhibition at the Museum of the Goldfields to showcase and honour the voices of the participating Elders. The exhibition ran from 28 February – 3 May 2026.
