Behind the scenes of the Strange Times project

Step behind the scenes of Strange Times, a project produced in 2025 to give young people the chance to share their experiences and perspectives in these strange times, by creating their own music videos.

Young people who attend Midland’s Swan City Youth Service (SCYS) had the opportunity to develop skills in filmmaking, editing and digital storytelling, and to learn about the branding, marketing and administration involved in being an artist.

The young people involved in this project had already been working with Rush Wepiha to write and record their own music tracks at SCYS. During the Strange Times project these young participants worked with Sydney-based filmmaker Johnny Yayo and local photographer/filmmaker Halim Mellick to plan, produce, film and edit high quality music video clips on their phones.

Participants also learned the ins and outs of navigating the music industry, from leading industry professionals.

Presented in partnership with SCYS, this project not only provided practical skills and pathways into the creative arts but was also designed to build young people’s self-confidence and self-esteem. Working with The Kids Research Institute (TKRI), CAN developed strategies that utilised and built on TKRI’s Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEW) framework.

Strange Times was supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Healthway, through the Creativity and Wellbeing for Young People Program.
