Now Sounds brought together a talented and diverse artist team to facilitate creative workshops for First Nations and Intercultural students at Balga Senior High School and Sevenoaks Senior College. Young people engaged in a range of creative activities such as beat-making, lyric writing, rap, and different styles of Afro-dance. The team of artists helped them explore their identity and hone their skills in composition, improvisation, production and performance.
The project continued beyond the schools and into Miriwoong Country, where the team held a week of workshops with young mob at the Kununurra PCYC. Here, the Now Sounds team were able to learn about and experience the rich culture of the Miriwoong people. They spent time with a Miriwoong Elder at the Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring Language and Cultural Centre, as well as on Country with traditional custodians Nawoola and Jayla Davey. It was an eye-opening experience that gave them a greater understanding of how important it is to preserve Indigenous cultures across WA.
Back on Noongar Boodjar, Now Sounds participants from Balga and Sevenoaks were given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Noongar culture. Facilitated by Kobi Morrison, a member of CAN’s Aboriginal Advisory Group, participants were able to gain an appreciation for the culture and language of Noongar Boodjar while learning how they can demonstrate respect when visiting country.
The culmination of all the young people's efforts will be a beautiful music video directed and edited by Bernice Jiang. This will be launched in March 2023 at Event Cinemas.
