The community painting workshops were held on May 19th and 20th and attracted a wide range of people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds who participated in painting the mural on the wall. A key feature of the mural was the word UNITY which sits at the heart of the design.
Community members added translations of ‘unity’ in their own languages within the mural, inspiring conversations about the languages spoken in the community and how unity can be interpreted and expressed in different cultures. Some of the languages in the mural include Arabic, Japanese, Bemba, Maori, Kannada and many more.
A highlight for everyone there was tasting the delicious, home-cooked crab curry that Shanthi, who is a City of Canning cultural ambassador, brought to the second workshop after feeling inspired by painting the crab in the mural!
Through this project, the community came together to create something beautiful and meaningful. The workshops were facilitated by the project's lead artist Nick Zafir. The mural is a reflection of the unity and diversity of the Canning community, showcasing the different languages spoken and the variety of artistic styles.
