The role of the arts in strengthening communities, amplifying citizen voices and building inclusive democracy is more important than ever. Contributing to that dialogue with truth and care presents an incredible opportunity and makes it an exciting time to take the reins at Community Arts Network.
Over four decades, CAN has had a collective impact that has punched way above its weight and it’s an honour to steward the legacy of the organisation's previous leaders.
My own 30-year career has been driven by the belief that the arts are for everyone, not a privileged few, and that telling stories is a powerful tool to communicate ideas and achieve transformational change and cultural equity. It was my recent work within social change arts organisation Big hART, that helped me realise the potential of arts practice based in, and coming from, community. I believe that it is by working collaboratively with community that the greatest impact of the arts can be achieved – shifting narratives and creating lasting change.
Through the arts, communities become stronger, more connected and more inclusive – our society becomes a place where every voice has the opportunity to shape our shared story.
CAN Team
Rick Heath
When people are supported to share their stories and identity, they claim their place in the civic conversation. This is what makes CAN relevant and necessary.
I am committed to ensuring the organisation continues to be driven by community needs and honours its 40 years' history delivering social justice.
I step to the role of CAN CEO determined to grow CAN’s influence and visibility, and together with community partners, realise the full impact of what’s possible.
