High VisAbility exhibition at PICA

Event

Celebrating identity and visibility, collaboration and possibility, High VisAbility was a playful pop-up exhibition, full of neon, fluoro fun that took place at PICA, as part of the 2024 AWESOME Festival, 17 September - 6 October.

The bold and bright artworks on display were a sample of the outcomes of the High VisAbility project, which illuminates pathways into the arts for young people with disabilities.

This project saw students from Sir David Brand School work with professional artists Mandy White and Natalie Scholtz to create artworks that explore identity, place and visibility. These works have been digitised and fused into the fluorescent sculptures and quirky animations.

This delightful pop-up was a taster of the artwork generated during High VisAbility, with more to be shared in the coming months.

Special events included the exhibition launch, Thursday 19 September, and a free "Drawing with Mandy White" workshop Tuesday 24 and Thursday 26 September, which invited participants to join Mandy in the PICA foyer for a mindful drawing workshop, exploring colour, creativity and any creature their imaginations could conjure.

Pictured top is Inside Out, an animation created during the High VisAbility project by artist and animator Jake Carlshausen and SDBS student Raphael, fusing Raphael's artworks with his fellow students' works.
