Community Cultural Development for Social Change: Developing critical praxis
Research Report
This 2014 article looks at a series of programs run by Community Arts Network in the Wheatbelt – including Voices of the Wheatbelt and the Strategic Partnership Alliance – designed to create, promote and improve opportunities for participation, network development and empowerment in rural West Australian communities.
The article recognises and highlights CAN’s commitment to challenging the continued social exclusion of Aboriginal people in contemporary Australia. Informed by writing within community and liberation psychologies, the writers discuss three of CAN’s projects, noting the key concepts of participation, power/empowerment and situated knowing. They observe that the projects are not only effective because they support Aboriginal people and communities through participatory art-making, but also because the projects recognise the need to transform the social context and discourse of post-colonial Australia.
