Arts and Culture in Western Australian Local Government

Research Report

At the point at which this report was published, in 2015, there had been little research into arts and culture investment in WA by local government. The findings of, and future directions suggested by, this report, therefore, were aimed at starting conversations with key decision makers about target investment and strategic opportunities.

Key findings included:

  • Local government expenditure on arts and culture amounted to approximately $155 million

  • 90% of survey respondents identified professional development needs in arts and culture

  • 90% of survey respondents believed that arts and culture play a significant role in the community

  • 13% of WA local governments had an overarching strategy or plan for arts and culture

  • 6% had Reconciliation Action Plans, 98% of WA urban local governments

  • 71% of regional local governments were active in culture and the arts

Recommendations were made around more effective planning, prioritisation of skills development and further research into collaborative planning between different government authorities, the impact of arts and culture on well-being, and analysis of arts and culture spending.
