Rekindling Stories on Country

Northam

Natalija Brunovs

Artist Ian WIlkes with poet Maitland Schnaars

OVERVIEW

In 2016 and 2017, CAN supported the Wheatbelt community of Northam to come together and collaborate on two significant community arts projects.

CAN ran a series of poetry and craft workshops designed to refine the skills and boost the confidence of participants while promoting Noongar culture, language and stories within the community.

From supporting a group of Noongar crafters to explore new avenues for showing and selling their art, to facilitating powerful poetry performances about local stories and history, the workshops and mentoring provided by artists and the CAN team led to many positive outcomes, including strengthened representation of Noongar artists within Western Australia’s contemporary arts scene.
