Sexually Transmissible Infections

An STI is an infection that can be spread during sexual contact with other people. Sexual contact includes intercourse, sucking, touching, fingering or kissing/licking genitalia.

STIs are generally caused by tiny micro-organisms such as viruses, bacteria or parasites.

They can cause a range of problems from mild itching to serious illness with long term effects. If left untreated, some STIs can cause infertility.

Sometimes STIs have symptoms you notice and you should get medical advice straight away. However, often there are no obvious signs of infection. So if your sexually active it's important to look after your sexual health by getting tested on a regular basis.

 The good news is:

  • Most STIs can be cured/treated

  • STIs that cannot be cured can now be managed well
