HIV in Australia

While worldwide figures on the HIV epidemic are alarming, in Australia we have been very effective at containing the virus.

Australian figures recorded to December 2007:

 Total HIV infections

26,259

 Total AIDS deaths

  6,709

 Total poeple living with HIV/AIDS

16,685

Last year (2007) there were 257 new HIV diagnoses in Victoria. This is a 9% increase from 2005.

HIV can be prevented through education, awareness and empowerment.
