Choosing a GP

Of all the decisions you will make whilst living with HIV, one of the most important is choosing your GP.

You may already have a GP you are happy with. If so, thats great! Be aware though that HIV medicine is a specialist field so your GP may want to refer you on. Alternatively, they may be able to work in partnership with a HIV specialist in caring for your health. If you don't already have a GP, it's a good idea to think about what you want from your relationship with your GP. You will probably be relying on them for care and support for many years. It's always best to shop around if possible to ensure you find a good match.

Questions you may ask a GP as part of your selection process
  • Have you had other patients with HIV?
  • Do you have much knowledge about HIV?
  • Are you able to prescribe antiretroviral drugs? (an S100 prescriber)
  • If not, how and where would I be able to access them?
  • What happens if I need to see you in a hurry or if you are unavailable?
  • Do you have a locum? (a doctor who 'stands in' when your gp is away)
  • Do you make housecalls if I am too unwell to come into the clinic?
  • Where is the closest hospital I would be admitted to if I became unwell?
  • Do you approve of the use of alternative therapies?
  • How do you work with injecting drug users? (For people who use recreational drugs and/or injectable drugs)
  • Do you bulk bill? If not, what will my out-of-pocket costs be?

If in doubt, rely on your own self-intuition. Do you feel comfortable with them? Can you talk easily to them? Do they have a sense of humour? Do they seem to have a genuine self-interest in your health and well-being and do they show an interest in HIV medicine? These things can make all the difference in a long and successful relationship with your GP.
