Sea of Red RibbonsHIV

For more than 25 years HIV has been with us. Many things have changed and improved in our fight against this virus. HIV is not the death sentence it once was and with medical advances and ongoing introductions of new drug treatments; someone newly infected with HIV has a more than 30 year life expectancy today!

We have come a long way from the days of the 'grim reaper' ads. Many things have changed, yet important issues remain the same. While HIV is no longer considered a ‘death sentence'; it remains a ‘life sentence' for those people living with the virus. There still is no cure and no vaccine. And unfortunately, with all that we know and with all the money spent on community education, people living with HIV still often face stigma and discrimination within our communities.

CAN, along with a range of passionate partner organisations like the Victorian AIDS Council/Gay Men's Health Centre, People Living With HIV/AIDS Victoria (PLWHA), Straight Arrows, Positive Women and national associations continue to be committed to the fight; promoting prevention of HIV and improved quality of life for PLHIV. We believe information and education are keys to someday winning the battle.
